What are Gameday Posters?

Gameday posters are promotional graphics that are used to promote a sporting event or game. They feature images or designs related to the teams or players participating in the game, as well as information about the game itself, such as the date, time, and location. Gameday posters are often posted on social media to help generate excitement and hype for the event.

How do you make Gameday Posters?

Every gameday poster starts with a little inspiration. From Pinterest to Twitter, you can find plenty of examples of gameday posters to model your poster off of. Once you have found a design you’d like to emulate, you can gather resources and organize them in a photo editor like Adobe Photoshop. Watch this very helpful video below to make a beginner’s gameday poster:

Here are the simple steps required to make a gameday poster:

  1. Choose a theme: Find a poster you’d like to model or emulate. Think of the colors of the teams you’ll be representing in the poster, and think of how you will order them.

  2. Gather resources: Collect any images or graphics that you want to include on the poster, such as team logos or action shots of players. You’ll also want to think of the HEX code colors for your team, which you can find using website tools like Google’s Color Picker.

  3. Create a layout: Use a design program, such as Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator, to lay out the elements of your poster. Arrange the images and text in a way that is visually appealing and easy to read. Remember to think of contrast between text colors (light text color on dark backgrounds, dark text colors on light backgrounds)

  4. Add the game information: Include the date, time, location, and teams involved in the game. Use a consistent font style that is easy to read.

  5. CHECK THE DATES! It’s always best to double-check if you have the correct information and player information!

  6. Post the poster: Once you are happy with your design, schedule your graphic to post on social media the morning of the game or match!

That seems like a lot of work for one marketing coordinator...

IT IS! I felt like managing the posts for 15 athletic teams per school year was too much for me… It seems like with multiple games in one day or games getting rescheduled due to weather, it is very challenging to create graphics for every scheduled event. Here’s what I did as a Marketing Coordinator to make my workflow the most efficient:

  1. I used Adobe Photoshop Variables/Datasets: Once I had about four designs I wanted to use, I would input variables like “date” and “time” and “opponent” into the graphic instead of the actual information. Then, I imported the schedules with the game information in CSV format so that they could be imported and connected to the variables on the poster templates.
  2. I wrote a Python Script to automate uploading and social media posting: Once the files were ready for upload, this would technically mean scheduling all the posts for each gameday on social media. I didn’t want to upload just the images… I wanted each post/tweet to have the text information as well. I wrote a program accessing our website API to schedule posts to our website and social media. This gave me so much more time to focus on the graphics instead of the posting.
