Social Media Videos in Education: Data doesn’t have to be boring! Mrs. Wilson’s class has found a fun way to collect, plot, and analyze data… With the Bottle Flip Challenge! How many can you land successfully?
Teachers Versus Social Media…
I often hear the complaint that today’s kids are more interested in social media and video games than doing their homework. The addicting videos are only a scroll away, and some reports say this activity harms their attention spans. It’s clear that many of the past and current teaching methods are not keeping up with the speed our kids want to go. Luckily, Mrs. Wilson has found a way to bridge that gap! By incorporating a traditional lesson about data and number plotting with the viral “bottle-flipping” game that took social media by storm, third-grade students at Poland Middle School advanced in mathematics while having fun!
Bottle-flipping videos went viral for one reason. Because of the challenge they pose. My gut reaction the first time I saw one was, “That can’t be so hard! I can do that!” 200 tries later and I actually could land a flip… And of course, moments like these never make it on camera! When our youth are achieving and succeeding in education, they only have so many metrics to prove it. Straight A’s on a report card might get the kid a boost in their allowance, and a compliment from a teacher might make Mom or Dad take their kid out for ice cream. But on ordinary days of learning, how else can kids know they are doing well and chase the feeling of achievement? We must meet our kids where they are in the classroom and at home, and we can do that by…
Recording Social Media Videos in Education!
Bring a camera into every classroom, and the kids spark up like stars, ready to perform! Classroom feature videos have very widespread benefits:
- Student Pride: Students are excited to learn and participate in activities knowing that they will be featured on YouTube. The excitement will replicate itself in many projects following a video, especially if another video is recorded.
- Learning Behaviors Change: Students behave more appropriately when they are on camera. They know that parents and teachers are watching!
- Community Pride: Residents of the district get to see the value of their school district in an engaging way that generates support for teachers and students.
- Social Media Promotion: Parents are likelier to share videos with their friends when their kid is in the video!
Often, there are not enough free hands to even think about recording a video, better yet editing and producing the video once recorded… This is why it is essential for school districts seeking their community’s support to invest in communications. By focusing on capturing the purpose (educating students), districts will naturally achieve their goals to improve the product of education. It all starts with the record button!
Recording classroom features yield many benefits for both teachers and students. A public school communications director can create a more engaging learning experience that promotes student participation. By embracing interactive communications in school districts, we can create a more engaging educational experience for all.
